Now i'm not afraid to admit that some days I like my job more than others...

For example;

That hour or so on the morning of Valentine's Day when you're hollow with anguish thinking you'll never sell it all and you've effectively bought yourself the Valentine's gift of bankruptcy - not so good.

Days like today - very good.

The reasons why today is a good day are threefold:

1. The sun has been shining for most of the morning.

2. Today marked the notable arrival of this year's very first bumble-bee. He was having a feast on some big pink cyclamen outside the shop. Did you ever wonder where bumble-bees go in the winter? I'll tell you... Into burrows in the ground like all the best beasts (badgers, hedgehogs, bears, dormice, squirrels, and some types of lemur). I know. Brilliant. If I was very small and looking for somewhere to hide I cant think of a better place than all cosy in Mr Bumble's burrow.

3. As if point 1 and 2 weren't proof enough that Spring is springing, the shop is simply heaving with gorgeous spring flowers, fresh from the market this morning!

We've got anemones in pale green and shocking pink, tulips of all shape and colour, daffodils from Jersey, scented British narcissi, chunky hyacinths in blue or pale lilac, and enormous ranunculus in the softest palest pink.

It's a feast for the senses in here. No wonder Mr Bumble chose us for his first breakfast.

Gingerlily's elves (they're not certified elves, but they do have pointy ears and red noses) have been so busy here at Ginger HQ that it's managed to find it's way to the 16th December and not a whisker of a Christmas blog from us! Outrageous... we'd better rectify it immediately.

We all have that person who's impossible to buy for - there's only so many smellies you can buy for someone before it starts to appear personal. Fear not, we have the solution!

Once upon a time there was a village, and in this village there was a garden.

It was a beautiful garden, where the trees hung low, laden with fruit, and the lawn was rich with spongy moss.

There were places to hide down low in the long grass, and there were places to hide high up in the bows, and there was even a boat!

Yes, a boat!

And in this garden played many children, who would have great adventures within it's tall walls. They would pack a lunch (last-night's-leftover sandwiches probably, purple soda-streams and little sweet apples from the trees, of which you would need three or four), and some essentials (shuttlecock, jam jar, playing cards, facepaint etc) and head away from the house to see what they could see.

Sometimes, they were gone for weeks.

But over time the children grew too tall to hide in the long grass, and they became too heavy to spring up to the tops of trees, and in the end they just didn't go on as many adventures.

But the garden remained, and the trees wiggled their roots snugly into the soil and waited, and the lawn stretched out and sighed a relaxed sigh... because they all knew that a day like today would come, one day.

This morning one of the children (who's tree climbing skills have probably gone, but who has gained other skills such as making a mean steak pie and floristry), returned to the garden.

She found the lawn glistening with pride as it bore a splendid marquee; and the trees turning purple from holding their breath so as not to drop the great clusters of ripe fruit and fairy lights gathered in their branches; and she found Kaili (the little girl who lived in the house that guarded the garden from the non-adventurers) beaming from ear to ear and surrounded by people she loves, as today is her Wedding Day.

(N.B. Kaili has grown up, by the way, she isn't a child any more, although i'm certain her tree climbing skills are enviable to this day).

And so what sort of flowers would do for a village wedding, held in an English walled garden bursting with memories and love?

Well, English flowers of course, arranged in gathered treasures: jugs and teapots borrowed from friends and family members.

Mme Gingerlily has recently had the pleasure of aquanting herself with the girls from Blooming Green, who grow fabulous planet-friendly flowers in Kent (www.bloominggreenflowers.co.uk). We've been hoping to use them for special events for some time, and today served as a wonderful chance.

I wish I could use their flowers every day for everything, it was so much fun!

On Thursday evening I zipped down to Kent, where Jen had left me out three fantastic buckets of their glorious green goodies. Oh, and an enormous spider which only revealed itself once it had hitched a ride back to the little shop. I can only assume it was planning to infiltrate the houses of parliament and overturn the government but fear not! He has been 'dealt with'. Along with my nerves *reaches shaking hand towards sherry bottle*.

Fearing I may ramble on forever and ever and never finish this blog entry, which would mean Mr Gingerlily and Mr Gingerlily's family (who are hurtling towards London from the 'North' as we speak) wouldn't get any dinner, i'm going to stop. Ta-ra.

.....oh just one more thing... highlight of my morning was seeing Simon, the president of the Ritz Carlton (and Kaili's uncle) wrestling the heart shaped herby wreath I made onto the garage door... check me out!

Amanda & Linsay are quite simply the kitchest, cutest, campest couple in the world!!!

They became 'wives for lives' on the 18th June 2010.

They weren't even a little bit interested in a traditional white wedding, and their day was a splendid celebration with a Jubilee theme!

Who says there has to be a bride and a not-so-bride at a lesbian wedding anyway? Amanda and Linsay both had gorgeous hot-pink bouquets to match their hot pink petticoats and linings (and their scorching personalities!).

There was much to-ing and fro-ing trying to keep eachother's flowers secret. We wanted them to be different but complementary, just like them!

Since we last checked in we've scaled a mountain, fed the otters, chased neices galore round shorelines galore, row-row-rowed our boats, held a boa constrictor (Mr.G not too impressed with that one), drunk lipsmacking strawberry cider, won the best steak pie competition, clapped so hard to live bluegrass that Madame G did herself a mischief, battled midnight spider assaults, photographed rock stars eating ice creams (just one actually), mopped bloodied brows, visited famous flower growers, gawped at falling meteorites, honed our catapault skills, and our stone skimming skills, dipped our toes in the sea on both sides of the UK and tested more fish&chips than you could shake a battered sausage at.... and now...
...we're back (minus cobwebs)!

Anne and Chrispin are right now no doubt basking in the sunshine, supping champagne and enjoying their first few moments of wedded life. What a day for it!

People often ask me, if Mr Gingerlily were ever to relieve me of my spinster status and make an honest florist of me, what would I have as my flowers?

Well, the answer would be... something like Anne's....

White peonies, jasmine from my sister's garden, 'memory lane' and 'sweet avalanche' roses, along with annabel hydrangeas and soft silvery mint.

Fragrant, seasonal, natural... all the things a summer bouquet should be.

And for bridesmaids, little simple posies of fluffy peonies, annabell hydrangeas, eucalyptus, jasmine and tiny little sea-holly for a cooling hint of blue.

And last but not least the tiniest of wrist corsages for the two year old flowergirl. I used the littlest peony i could find, with a tiny hint of eupatorium and a scented freesia.

Long hot summer days like when we were little....

We've been a little bit rubbish at keeping in touch lately, sorry...

Rest assured, Madame Gingerlily has been squirrelling away busily in Gingerlily HQ, making flowers for weddings galore as well as filling the local houses with the sights and scents of summer. And what a beautiful summer it's turning out to be!

At the moment in the little shop we are enjoying the company of huge fluffy peonies; pink 'Sarah Bernhardt' peonies, which fill the shop with the heady scent of vanilla, next to delicate white 'Shirley Temple' peonies, who's floral scent is reminiscent of great clouds of jasmine.

And just this week we were joined by our friends the frilly scabiosa, who despite their slightly icky name are really very charming, as well as the first of the lavender, and plenty of grand English delphiniums.

Less warmly welcomed was the huge black beetle who had burrowed into one of the bouquets in the display. A stowaway! He blew his own cover by leaving a suspect penny-sized hole in the paper, and sure enough, on investigation, there he was, having a right old nibble on me precious blooms! The cheek of it.

He has now been sent on his way don't you worry flower fans. Nothing gets past me!

Winter Wedding ~ Sam & Lindsey ~ 5th December 2009.

Lindsey and Sam held their magical wedding in rural Essex on the 5th of December 2009.

Their colourscheme was taken from Sam's family tartan, so we had a brief of midnight blues and wintery whites to start from. We used wonderful snowy white ranunculus with shiny metallic vibernum berries, complemented with blue and white anemones and silvery eucalyptus.

The beautiful Lindsey makes her entrance, followed by her gorgeous bridesmaids in dresses as dark as the night sky.

The service was held at the spectacular St Mary's Parish Church in Great Dunmow, close to where Lindsey grew up.

The grand interior of the church was personalised using pew ends of festive white amaryllis, ming fern and eucalyptus, finished with trailing ivory ribbons, and pedestals of amaryllis, eryngium, antirhinum, ming fern and eucalyptus.

And then on to the reception at the splendid Gosfield Hall, once a royal residence and retaining all its rich splendour as a wedding venue today.

The wedding breakfast was held in the former ballroom, so we had a real challenge to design grand centrepieces for the tables which would hold their own in the respendant surroundings. They needed to be tall, grand, wintery and sparkling with candlelight.

We used tall vases filled with grand festive amaryllis and tall stems of twisted willow. From these we hung bell-shaped candleholders which were lit with clear tealights as dusk fell, giving a sparkling magical feel to the room.

Along the top table we placed three low vases filled with ranunculus, anemones, bouvardia and eryngium, reflecting the bridal bouquet. These were alternated with five hurricane vases holding small church candles to continue the candlelight accross the room.

Keeley & Ian held their beautiful wedding in Islington on the 26th of September 2009.

Keeley is a girl after my own heart when it comes to flowers... preferring wildflowers and old fashioned charm to big bold modern blooms. So with this in mind we designed pretty, vintagey, romantic flowers to suit her style.

These included a variety of sumptuous roses, lacy ammi, fluffy fronds of astilbe, pretty little waxflower and rosemary.

They held their reception at The Alma, where they asked me to fill as many pretty bottles with flowers as I could. A simple, unfussy way to bring a floral feel to the festivities.

Wedding Elaine & Billy ~ 10th October 2009

Elaine and Billy were married in the little church on Clissold Park on the 10th of October. Elaine wore a vintage frock and requested a natural, wildflower feel for her flowers.

Elaine's bouquet was a gorgeous Neptune's dream of blues and creams; using full cream roses, ocean-blue hydrangeas, spiky sea holly, star-like eupatorium and little spruces of vibernum berries which shone like jewels.

A particular favourite of Elaine's were the sea holly (thistles), so we used these for the buttonholes, which were worn by ladies and gents alike.

The bridesmaids carried a single head of grand blue hydrangea each; perfect, just as they are.

Angie & Tom ~ 26th September 2009 <3

Angie and Tom held their intimate wedding in the beautiful piano room at Burgh House, and moved onto a private dining room in a nearby restaurant. For this they needed versatile flowers, which could be used first to decorate the venue, and later to adorn the table during dinner.

Their colourscheme was shades of purples, which conjoured images of velvet and night-skies...

We decided to make a trio of vases, each taking different shades from the colourscheme; ranging from creamy shades with avalanche roses, bouvardia and freesias, to lilac gentiana and trachelium, given depth with velvetty purple lisianthus, and real richness with the darkest shades of almost black cosmos and shiny vibernum berries, all complemented with crisp, frosty senecio sprigs.

Angie's bouquet used a sumptuous mix of these flowers, finished with a twist of ivory taffeta ribbon and pearl pins. And for the boys, an unfussy mix of white freesias, vibernum berries and icy senecio.

Christening "Welcome to the World, Maddy!"

Little Maddy was Christened on the 12th of September 2009, and had a party at the Duke of Cambridge afterwards to celebrate.

Maddy's Mum, Sarah requested pretty girly flowers, without using screamingly bright pinks, so we called on the services of our old favourites, the Sweet Avalanche roses. We teamed these with big, blousy double lisianthus, foxtaily lysamachia and sweetly scented freesias, to give a fluffy, feminine, frivolous feel to the festivities.

Two medium sized arrangements for the buffet table were complemented with little table arrangements in terracotta plantpots; a cost effective and supercute solution!

Leti's Lovely Local Wedding ~ 12th June 2009

Leti was married at the start of June, right in the heart of peonie season. Any bride would be a fool not to have peonies if peonies are available, and Leti certainly was no fool!

For Leti's bouquet, we used blushing pink peonies (to match her fantastic pink shoes) with full sumptuous 'avalanche' roses, rosemary and lavender. Not a fan of frills and froo-froo, Leti chose to have her bouquet finished with a simple knot of raffia. Beautiful, unfussily English chic.

Leti's bridesmaid carried a similar bouquet, this time with the emphasis on the roses, and a looser feel was achieved by using more of the inbetweenies; the lavender and the rosemary.

As you entered the Unitarian Church where Leti's service was held, you were greeted on either side by the glorious sight and scent of huge white 'Shirley Temple' peonies, softened with lacy white agapanthus.

... And as you walked down the aisle to your seat you were given a hint of the bridal bouquet, where pew ends lined either side of the Church with 'Sweet Avalanche' roses, 'Aqua' roses, lavender and rosemary, again tied with simple knots of undied raffia. (You'll have to excuse the amateur photographics here... Gingerlily's camera was M.I.A on the day!)

And finally, at the front of the church, two grand statement vases celebrated the day, overflowing with peonies, roses, agapanthus and veronica, floating like great happy clouds.

19. Steph & Lee ~ 6th June 2009.

Steph came to me several months ago all bubbling with excitement about the beautiful wedding she was planning. It was to be a fantastic mix of old and new, and she had been tirelessly collecting vintage cake stands for months in preparation (all except the ones her grandmother had kindly lent to her).

Steph came into the shop and perused the selection of flowers we had, and also collected pictures from magasines of blooms she liked. Together we were able to design a theme which fitted perfectly with her ideas... Sweet Avalanche roses, Old Dutch roses, delicate spray roses, and to complement the purple bridesmaid dresses we used lavender and sweet peas, all interspersed with English garden herbs for foliage; rosemary and sage.

Steph's bouquet used all the flowers, whilst her bridesmaids had a fluffy mix of heady sweet-peas and spray roses.

For the boys, an Old Dutch rose with a purple freesia was all that was needed, whilst the flowergirls each had a Sweet Avalanche rose wired for their hair. Mums had matching corsages of Sweet Avalanche and spray roses.

For the tables, each cake stand was uniquely decorated with a selection of the flowers, and finished with a handmade church candle in soft pink or cream.

And for the final touch... we arranged a few grand Sweet Avalanche roses to make a very pretty cake into an absolutely irresistable one!

Steph and her new husband are sunning themselves in Bali at the moment the lucky beggars, but hopefully we should have some more photos of the big day on their return.

18. Susan and Darren ~ 23rd May 2009

Susan and Darren were married at the beautiful St Georges Bloomsbury church on the 23rd of May.

Gingerlily arrived to adorn the pews with simple tied bunches of white flowers, and were fortunate enough to have the singer who was singing for the service practising whilst we worked. I'm slightly ashamed to say she brought a tear to my eye!

Susan chose some of my favourite flowers, bouvardia, white thistles, spray roses and sweetly scented freesias, all in gorgeous classic whites with silvery foliage (eucalyptus and sage).

The bridesmaids had delicate wrist corsages containing Old Dutch Roses, spray roses and freesias, whilst the flowergirls carried pure white bouquets of freesias and akito roses.

The reception was held in London's exclusive Soho House! How exciting! The grand venue needed just a touch of Susan's own style, and a hint of rustic charm to contrast with the oh so glam surroundings and the hussle and bussle of Old Compton Street. We achieved this by using little tin flowerpots for each of the tables, overflowing with the same combination of white flowers.... a cool and sophisticated look with an injection of country calm.

17. Julia & Neil ~ 17th April 2009

Julia and Neil are getting married this afternoon, hurray!

Julia was keen to add a touch of vintage style with her flowers, but updated the look by adding a flash of vibrant fushia, using fantastic Amalia roses, and sweetly scented freesias (a favourite of Neil's Mum). Cream spray roses, sage and delicate spruces of vibernum finished the look.

The flowergirls carried simple freesia bouquets with a collar of peppermint sage, whilst the bridesmaids had delicate wrist corsages tied with cream satin ribbon which mirrored Julia's bouquet.

And for the boys? A simple cream Akito rose, a wink of coloured freesia and a nod of vibernum... not too girly but in keeping with the theme.

I hear that Julia's dress is something reeeally special. Fingers crossed for a picture soon.

Marni & Andy were wed in Islington and held their reception at Gingerlily's lovely local, The Alma.

Marni knew only one thing... she wanted white flowers. And white flowers she did get! She had enlisted the help of a close friend, Kate, who did an amazing job collecting antique cut glass vases for me to fill with white blooms for the big day.

I loved these flowers... look at them all lined up in the shop... So beautiful and each one unique. We used roses and tulips and freesias and phlox and bouvardia and stocks for a fresh but classic mix with a definite nod towards springtime.

For Marni's bouquet, simple white tulips and Akito roses were all that was needed to complement her vintage knee length dress.

Congratulations Marni & Andy, and thank you for the sweets they were yummy!

14. Sara & Mike - 13th December 2008

Gingerlily had a wonderful Christmas, which kicked off with a festive wedding. Festive, that is, if a football stadium in red and green counts!

Sara & Mike are huuuge Arsenal fans! So where better for them to spend their special day than at the Emirates Stadium?! Nowhere, that's where.

They were wed overlooking the stadium from the lofty heights of the Diamond Club, and wanted flowers which were romantic, glamorous, red (obviously!) and also had a touch of Christmas spirit to kick start the season.

Sara was a dream to work with, she knew exactly what she wanted but was open to suggestions, and conducted the whole wedding-planning affair with military precision and a healthy helping of great British humour. Thank you, Sara!

We combined modern glamour (in the shape of fishbowls with Grand Prix roses and Lilygrass, resting on a bed of magic, sparkling, non-melting florist's 'ice') with Christmas fun by using tea lights between the flowerheads and little silver pine-cones on the tables.

We also softened the area where the ceremony was held with gorgeous 5 1/2 foot bay trees, entwined with fairy lights (Christmas, you see...!) and wired Grand Prix roses. These were so pretty in real life.

Sara looks so happy in these pictures, which is wonderful, especially considering the score that day!

12. Alex & James - 15th November 2008

Alex and James are getting married in 20 minutes from the time of writing this. How exciting!

Alex is wearing a vintage style lace gown (lets hope the groom isn't reading Gingerlily's blog as we speak!)... and so the order of the day was vintage style flowers.

She chose a charming mix of Old Dutch roses, Elbtal Hydrangeas and was quite open to suggestions on the other flowers to complement these.

And for the bridesmaid, rather than the traditional bouquet, we designed a large fluffy wrist corsage. Can't wait to see the photos!

Each member of the service congregation was made a buttonhole... simple hydrangea florets with sage leaves for the gentlemen, a sprig of baby's breath and a lisianthus pip added to these created the ladies' adornments.
And for the mums, a special corsage incorporating the colours of their outfits.

We cheekily asked Alex to take photos for us and hope to bring you some in good time, but here is a little look at the flowers all packaged ready to go.

Ahhhh, we like weddings here at Gingerlily. And tea, which is the next job on the list...

11. Jacqui and Mark - 25th October 2008

Jacqui and Mark were wed on the 25th of October 2008.

Jacqui had a dazzling peacock blue dress made especially for the occasion, and wanted flowers with complemented this bright and unusual style.

She had luxurious Grand Prix roses, teamed with smaller Tamango spray roses and trailing ivy for a softer, more feminine feel.

8. Sarah and Rhys - 4th October 2008

Sarah had designed her own dress, using soft grey silk and duck-egg blue chiffon, and wanted a bouquet that would complement this.

We designed this pure white combination of Avalanche roses, sweet scented freesias and ranunculus, the first of the season.

After completing the bouquet late last night I woke early this morning in order to photograph it in natural light.... it was the first very cold morning and the snowy white bouquet seemed so fitting for a truly wintery October day. Brr!

Our kitten Indy was interested at first but soon became distracted by a daddy-long-legs which had confusingly landed on the outside of the patio doors...

7. A Moment of Quiet Remembrance...

Funerals pieces are a thoughtful process here at Gingerlily.

We prefer the flowers we use to hold a specific meaning with regards to the deceased, and do our best to honour the memory of that person.

It is important that we include some images of funeral work conducted here, but do so with great respect.

6. Ed & Jude - September 2008

Ed and Jude were married in France the week before, returning to London to don the glad rags again and have a post-wedding wedding!

And why the devil not?!

The dramatic display seen here included white 'Cherbourg' lilies, gorgeous fluffy midnight blue delphiniums and bright agapanthus. These flowers were reflected in the table centres and Jude's bouquet, and also in the cake corsages which were a cascade of cream roses and agapanthus pips.

4. 2007 Was a Good Year for Romance.

2007 was wedding boot-camp for Gingerlily! They came thick and fast, the bells never stopped ringing, there was plenty of love in the air...

There was plenty of variety; Jan and Richard chose soft and romantic roses, Lisa and Ian had classic calla-lillies, and we finished off the year with snowballs of ranunculus and anemones at Amanda and Oliver's beautiful Christmas wedding at Greenwich Royal Naval College.

5. Emily & Mike - August 2008

Emily and Mike were married in Islington on the 16th of August, and Gingerlily were delighted to be a part of this happy day!

Emily's bouquet used avalanche roses, white lisianthus and agapanthus, finished with a simple twist of satin ribbon. These flowers were mirrored in the mini flowergirl bouquets and also in wired flowers for Emily's hair.

2. Where it all began... Sara & Nick's Wedding

A wee while ago my charming older sister, Sara, became betrothed to a most suitable young man called Nick. Of course we were all over the moon, I was so excited and desperate to help out where-ever I could.

I had always been fascinated by flowers, and had often wondered about becoming a florist but hadn't know where to begin. Then Sara came up with a bright idea to save some wedding cash... send me on a one day course at McQueens!

So off I went all beaming with anticipation and guess what... I LOVED it! It sounds corny but I knew then (after spending a fortune on an art degree!) that I wanted to do floristry as a career, I felt at home, it was creative, messy and so rewarding.

So before the big day I decided to enroll onto a proper course, a complete one-stop-shop of floristry skills at Judith Blacklock's school in Knightsbridge.

Three months later was the big day, and in our naivety we designed enormous table centres, extravagant church displays, wired bouquets... the complete works. The table centres were raised on tall vases filled with cymbidium orchids and had little lights which lit up the stems as the sun went down, transforming the feel inside the marquee from daytime to partytime.

Sara's bouquet contained Sweet Avalanche roses, a rose which I still can't help buying every morning in the flower market as they are such beautiful, full, soft pink blooms, and cymbidium orchids.

It was an amazing day, particularly memorable for myself not just for being my gorgeous big sister's wedding day and the best party I have ever been to, but also because it marked the start of a career that makes me happy.
